A simple guide to looking after your tattoo, inspired by Ink Nurse’s clean, protect and moisturise approach. Your artist’s instructions always come first.

The size, placement and dressing used can change your aftercare routine. Follow the specific instructions you receive at your appointment.
Clean hands, gentle washing and moisturising as directed are the foundations. More product is not necessarily better.
If your dressing leaks, lifts or irritates your skin, contact your artist for dressing advice. Seek medical advice for suspected infection or a concerning reaction.
Before leaving, ask your artist when and how to remove your dressing. Different films and coverings have different wear times. Wash your hands before touching the tattoo and do not apply one brand’s timing to another.
Once the dressing is removed as directed, use clean hands, a gentle cleanser and water. Rinse carefully and pat dry with a clean disposable towel. Do not scrub or soak the area.
When your artist advises, apply a small amount of a suitable, fragrance-free aftercare product to clean, dry skin. Use a thin layer rather than a heavy coating, and follow the product instructions.
Keep the area out of direct sun. Avoid swimming, baths and soaking while it heals. Choose clean, loose clothing that does not rub or stick, and leave flakes and scabs alone.
Increasing or spreading redness, warmth, swelling, worsening pain, pus or fever can need prompt medical attention. Contact a healthcare professional if you suspect infection. Get urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty or feeling seriously unwell. Do not rely on webchat for urgent care.
